Artist Statement

This compositional process was developed in collaboration with Dr. Liz DeBetta.

Step One

Here are some writing prompts to help you get started.

Jot down 8 “I am” statements

  • 4 positive traits
  • A hobby
  • Something you’re working on
  • Something you’re curious about
  • A statistic or fact about you

Continue by writing 5 more statements about yourself (your choice).

Step Two

Spend 10 minutes jotting down some thoughts about what art is or means to you. Start with “Art is…” or “Art means…”

What does art offer to people? What do you have to offer to others? How do you and art align?

Step Three

Using the process above as a jumping-off place, compose an artist statement to use as a reference performance text. Begin with “I am an artist.” Then, elaborate about your particular, individual, and unique sense of what it is to be an artist and who you aspire to be as a creative person. Use this format:

I am an artist.
I am an artist because___________________
I am an artist even though_____________________
I am an artist when I____________________
I am an artist.
