This exercise is based on the work of Dr. Joseph Stemple.
All of the exercises should be performed at the softest possible volume that still allows for a fully-engaged sound (i.e., no breathiness).
Sustain each exercise until you totally run out of air. Those last few seconds will create an isometric contraction in the intrinsic muscles of the larynx.
Step 1: Warmup
Hold a soft, ‘nasty,’ forward, ringing “HEE” as long as possible. The demonstrated note is only a suggestion.
The goal here is vocal fold efficiency.
Example:
Step 2: Stretching
With the ‘lip kazoo,’ slowly glide from low to high on the word “knoll.”
The goal here is range of motion and smooth register transitions.
Example:
Step 3: Contracting
Reverse the stretching exercise, gliding from high to low on the word “dole.”
The goal here is range of motion and smooth register transitions.

Step 4: Strengthening
Sustain a series of tones with the ‘lip kazoo’ on the word “old” for as long as possible. The demonstrated tones are a suggestion–feel free to modify if these feel disconnected from your speaking range.
The goal here is strength and stamina.
