The exercise is simply to open and close the jaw: gently, slowly, and smoothly.
While you explore the gentle, slow, and smooth movement of the jaw joint, here are some things you might cultivate awareness of:
Can you allow the breath to arrive and depart on its own? Does the breath want to synchronize with the jaw movement? Regardless of your answer, what happens if you try something different?
Can you be aware of your head/spine relationship as the jaw moves? How does the jaw movement impact this relationship? Can you allow the jaw to move independently?
What happens if you allow your eyes to slowly scan the room, finding subtle variations in the relationships of your skull, spine, and jaw?
Is there the possibility for more ease, pleasure, or curiosity in this exploration? How does that impact your breath response?
When you’re finished, try to take your work with you into the next thing you do.
